Learn How Acupuncture Can Relieve Pain and Improve Sleep, Digestion, and Emotional Wellness.
Acupuncture has been an effective form of healthcare for thousands of years.
Acupuncture is recognized by leading national and international health organizations to be effective in relieving the symptoms of a wide range of medical problems/symptoms.
The National Institute of Health and the World Health Organization have designated holistic medicine and acupuncture as effective in helping with multiple health conditions.
What’s in an acupuncture treatment?
Before the treatment begins a patient is briefly interviewed as well as examined to determine which acupuncture points are best for the patients. This ancient Chinese treatment that was earlier shunned in the American medical science is now being used to treat ailments such as back pain, knee pain, hair loss, diabetes, weight loss, infertility, and others.
This is a clear indication that acupuncture treatment can not only improve the quality of life but also reduce the stress level and ensures improved as well as fast recovery from an injury. The technique also helps human beings maintain their emotional balance.
What conditions can be treated?
Acupuncture treatments can help a patient with the things he or she wants to cure, heal, or improve on his or her health. While some turn to acupuncture treatment for one or two ailments, there are some who have dozens of reasons for their visit. The main ones are:
- Knee pain
- Leukopenia
- Low back pain
- Malposition of fetus, correction
- Morning sickness
- Nausea and vomiting
- Neck pain
How does it work?
Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese practice performed by placing ultra-thin needles in certain parts of the human body. Today, over 3.5 million people in the United States alone, depends on acupuncture treatments. Acupuncture works by releasing the flow of vital energy in the human body.
This technique works by stimulating certain points along fourteen different pathways. These needles further compel the human body to release a natural painkiller called endorphins, which improves the blood flow and changes in the activities of a human brain.
Tongue Diagnosis in Traditional Chinese Medicine
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Tongue Diagnosis is considered to be one of the most important tools used by acupuncturists to understand your constitution, AKA your body’s yin-yang balance. Based on the ancient classic approach to understanding the body and it’s interconnected meridian channels, all the major organs pass through the tongue. As such, it is said that the pattern of your tongue can suggest some patterns of imbalance.
Examples of this? If you’re over mental activity, there will definitely be an extra red area at the tip. If you’re feeling sluggish in digestion? There may be some dampness, aka extra coating in the middle of your tongue. It’s a fascinating practice, and when combined with other lifestyle and health questions, this approach can be used by acupuncturists to provide personalized health recommendations.
Why a Tongue Diagnosis?
In order to get a better understanding of what’s going on internally, we look for patterns on the tongue. Your tongue is divided into 3 parts – the top, middle, and back part. Each part represents the top, middle, and lower part of our thoracic cavity. So the top of the tongue will reflect our heart, the middle will focus on the spleen and digestion as well as the liver, and the lower back will feature the kidney.
What are the patterns?
To understand the tongue, we will look for patterns in the three following ways
(1) Color
(2) Shape
(3) Coating
Color:
You might think your tongue is only red or pink, or some kind of fleshy color. But in fact the range between pink to scarlet red to maroon tells your TCM physician what’s the state of your body.
Shape:
Tongues come in all shapes and sizes! There are long and skinny tongues, short and stumpy ones, or even wide and flabby tongues. All of these shapes and sizes are unique to you and tell a story about your body.
Coating:
Contrary to the trends, TCM medicine recommends that you do not tongue scrape! This texture, density, color are all-telling. We look for signs of color imbalance in your tongue coating to understand what is your yin-yang balance.
While your tongue pattern may differ from different times throughout the day, this difference is only marginal because the underlying pattern of your body will be there. We recommend incorporating a monthly self-care check to look at your tongue-diagnosis seasonally.
How to prepare for a Tongue diagnosis and what to know before you go:
Prior to your Tongue diagnosis, you’ll want to avoid a few different things. As mentioned above, tongue scraping is not advised. Avoid this to get your most accurate diagnosis. You’ll also want to be sure not to drink coffee or tea, and not to eat any foods 1 hour before your diagnosis.
Taking a selfie?
If you’re getting your Tongue diagnosis virtually, you’ll want to use natural lighting. When it comes time to snap your selfie, don’t stick your tongue out for more than 15 seconds. This helps to prevent pumping blood to the tongue (which will affect its color!). With a natural “ahhhh”, keep your tongue out for about 5-10 seconds, max. And that’s it!

Commonly Asked Questions
How Does Acupuncture Work?
In traditional Chinese acupuncture, there are as many as 2,000 acupuncture points on the human body. Needles inserted in specific combinations at these points interact with the fascial network (our internal messenger system) to alter brain chemistry. For example to reduce pain, acupuncture points will tell your brain to increase endorphins (aka the body’s natural painkillers).
Do the Needles Hurt?
Acupuncture needles are very thin, and most people feel no pain or very little pain when they are inserted. They often say they feel energized or relaxed after the treatment. However, the needles can cause temporary soreness.
Is it Safe?
Acupuncture is considered to be safe when done by a trained professional. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates acupuncture needles and restricts their use to licensed practitioners. The FDA requires acupuncture needles to be sterile, nontoxic, and labeled for single use.
